The trustee has a board of nine directors that consist of employer and member nominated representatives in equal numbers and one independent director.
- Four member directors are nominated by the CFMEU. Three are from the CFMEU and the fourth from other unions representing coal mining industry members, including the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia (APESMA), Communications Electrical Plumbing Union (CEPU) and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU).
- Four employer directors, with two nominated by the NSWMC and two by the QRC.
- One director is an independent director.
All directors are appointed by the trustee board.

Board committees
The trustee has established committees to advise it and make decisions about important issues affecting your super.
The committees comprise of trustee directors and external people with specialist skills that meet a number of times each year and include:
- Investment committee – Makes decisions on how your super is invested, including which investment managers and investment sectors to invest in. Sets investment objectives and strategies and monitors investment performance.
- Claims committee – Reviews insurance claims, including disputed and complex claims. Makes decisions on the payment of some claims.
- Audit, risk and compliance committee – Makes sure AUSCOAL Super follows the government’s laws, rules and regulations. Monitors risk management, compliance, audit and other governance activities.
- Remuneration and organisational development committee – Makes sure staff and directors’ salaries are ‘fair and reasonable’ and assists with organisational and staff development and training programs. Monitors human resources and occupational health and safety matters.
- Strategy committee – Reviews the long-term direction of AUSCOAL Super and makes sure we’re well-placed to deal with long-term changes in the super industry.
